Deadlift Training

In preparation for Adlington Push and Pull next weekend, I deadlifted last night again. Working upto 250kg (see video).

Much to work on with my technique and speed from the floor but coming on fairly well (in relation to what I have been doing). I hope to add about 5% for the comp but 10% would be great.

I'm currently alternating speed deadlifts (50-60%1RMAX 2sets 10-12 reps) in Westside Barbell Style along with pyramid training for the other session(this lift is from my pyramid)

Although deadlift is not one of my usual lifts (I have dabbled the odd time or two over the years), I have a long term target of 300kg (660lbs) which this should set me off nicely in the right direction.

For a big bloke I'm not particularly strong in comparison to bodyweight, there are many guys lifting triple bodyweight in the deadlift (but also tearing their own arseholes out training for it), next weekend will see plenty of guys doing this.

The main trick with heavy deadlift is keeping the bar moving and training through your deadlift sticking point.

As deadlift is a full body movement it will certainly transfer over into many other manly activities, one such method I saw for this was by an American sprint trainer who adopted deadlifting along with plyo's about 3 times per week all year round. This kept explosive power and absolute strength topped up all year long and freed up time for more specific training. Interesting stuff check out his website here

In addition to the deadlift the other lift in the competition is the 2 hands anyhow for this I will be using continental clean and jerk (or push press possibly), a great resource for Jerk training can be found here from ditillo2.blogspot.com

Bugger - just had a thought as I hit return:- What if you deadlift whilst wearing a weighted vest; your legs don't know the weight isn't on the bar (but hey we aint grip trainin') but may be fooled due to a more advantagious CoG, all other variables being the same - you'll still be lifting more. How long would you have to wear a vest until the body assimilates this extra weight as being 'just body weight?'. This harks back to that old bird with a weight fixed to it's wing thingy from years back...

Good luck in the Comp. Rob! Found a KB that's sized for you as well; 203#'s. Now you won't have to put that handle on a Volkswagen for a bit.

    Have a good one!

Had a go at wide stance sumo but no go with any bigish weights. It may suit me in the future (after comp) if I get used to it. It certainly feels more natural.

I did try that years ago with my mate on my back (no dodgy business BTW), but sounds likea good idea to maybe get over my sticking point. Will have a go today or tomorrow. Cheers HMGS

Cheers Jason, matey! 203lbs sounds like a nice weight. Once I've mastered my 80kg (176lb) bell i may be ready. Still I like the sound of a handle on a car :)
